Cho Oyu 8201 meters
The 6th highest peak in the world lies on the border running between Nepal and Tibet. Its North face was first reckoned in 1952 by Edmund Hillary who was the first man to climb Everest a year later. The first expedition trying to summit already in 1952 wasn't successful. The summit was reached in 1954 by an Austrian expedition which made it the fifth 8000+ m peak being climbed.
In Tibetan the mountain is called Turquoise Goddess. It is located about 20 km West of Mt. Everest. It can be clearly seen in the panorama towering above the lower peaks and sitting between Everest (the highest) and Lhotse (the fourth highest). Just West of Cho Oyu is located a glacier pass (at about 5800 meters) called Nagpa La. It used to serve as a trade route for goods being exchanged between Nepal and Tibet. The famous Namche Bazar town is also not far away.
Cho Oyu has been underestimated many times and by so many. It looks easy with her poker face but can be very moody as Miro can tell from his own thrilling experience. The famous Reinhold Messner also succeeded only on his fourth attempt. The climbing profile chosen for the 4-4-8 includes two long ice passages with 50º - 75º incline. As with most of the peaks there are several routes leading to the summit. Extremely difficult and dangerous is the South-East face which was first ascended in 1978 by an Austrian expedition.
