The name - as well as the uniqueness - of the Project 4-4-8 comes from its goal of climbing 4 over 8000 meter summits in only 4 months. It is a world record attempt in mountain-climbing by Miroslav Caban, a Czech mountaineer and the second man in the world to accomplish the ‘7 Summits’ (climbing the highest peak on every continent) without the use of oxygen.
Miroslav Caban started the preparation stage for the Project 4-4-8 already in 2006 by attempting to climb a number of summits. The first was the highest summit of North America, Mount McKinley, 6194 meters. Its climate and conditions resemble those of the Himalayas very much. Technical climbing on the other hand was trained extensively on Mount Kenya in Africa in September. The very ice of the Himalayas was tried on the Mount Pumori in October.
The Project 4-4-8 starts in April with climbing of Shisha Pangma, 8046 meter peak, that is the ‘easiest’ in terms of technical climbing. Then the acclimatized group of mountaineers will be transported in jeeps close to Cho Oyu to try a ‘rapid’ climb up. After these two peaks the climbing partners of Miro Caban will fly back to the Czech Republic and he will stay behind to climb the remaining two summits only with help of one sherpa.
A week of quick rehabilitation will take place in the Himalayas and Miro will fly through Islamabad to Skard in Pakistan in June. He then has to use helicopter transportation to the Base Camp under Broad Peak. The whole movement will take two weeks which will add time for the crucial regeneration and relaxation. Because of the acclimatization from the previous two 8000+ meter peaks he will be able to climb the Broad Peak in relatively short time.
The decisive external factor is weather. Weather conditions are favorable for climbing in Nepal in April & May and in Pakistan in June & July. The very summit as well as the finale of the extraordinary Project is the world’s most difficult peak K2, which Miroslav has experience of from before - like of Cho Oyu. The experience and knowledge of these peaks from previous expeditions shall help decisively to end this challenging project in success and with a world record and a new height of a challenge to be met by other foremost mountaineers.
You can follow the progress of the project on each mountain on this site, so stay tuned!
