How did you find out about Suunto?
I found out about Suunto from my friends, mountaineers. When I started to play with it I knew that it was what I was going to need.
How do you use Suunto products?
The most important for me have been: following the changes and development of barometric pressure (which allows me to predict weather which is crucial for successful and safe climbing), recording of all the information and storing it in the memory of the wristop (it's really cool to see few weeks after that you were on the very peak and show the recorded height to others), compass and alarm clock (it is very important to go along a fixed and regular schedule at the altitude of 7000 meters and multifunctional alarms help a lot). These are the functions that are crucial for me.
What do you get out of using the Suunto products?
With the new line of models (note: the Suunto 6- and 9-series products) you can download all the recorded data into a laptop or PC. That is simply perfect. Not only that you can store them forever but you can work with them in detail and analyze your performance. And you can share them with people by sending via email or uploading them to Suuntosports.com, which is also great.
When I was writing the book "Cho Oyu & Everest" I had to draw the height profile graphs by hand. In 2005 I switched for the X6 HR and since then all the altitude graphs are 'drawn' just by one click of the mouse by the computer. And they are complemented with exact time & date data. So virtually you can study every second of your trek and with no need for paper and pen. But you must not forget to record it.
In the summer 2006 I found out about the Suunto's training line and I found the functions (especially the Training Effect) very interesting. I tried them and it means for me an important step towards optimal training. Before I leave for the expedition I do the physical training phase. So it is very important to train as much as I can, yet it must be efficient and not to ruin my health.
Why do you like Suunto products?
Because they fulfil what they promise. And that is very important for my sport as well as for me personally. I also like Suunto because it was with me at Everest - on the peak and all the way up and down from it. And it's in the memory of both of us.
Suunto has also been helping me to evaluate coming things appropriately and I think that it saved my life in few situations.
